Living in New Mexico’s high desert, I’m constantly inspired by the succulents and cacti that are native here. This is a claret cup hedgehog. I’ve also heard it called a strawberry hedgehog. Their flowers start to bloom here in late April or May. When they’re not blooming, they can be a bit hidden, but once their bright red buds appear, you start seeing them everywhere! Its hard to choose, but these might be my favorite native cactus to this area.
